Hanoi-street scenes and an international incident averted

Sunday morning we set out for the "old city" of Hanoi we had a few hours before leaving for Hue. Here are a few scenes along the way.

We finally reached the old city. Hang at the front of the name means business Buom I don't know but most of the streets in this section contain a specific trade.

Despite the careful eye of Hanoi's best a potential crime was lurking. Out of nowwhere this man accosted Michele's right shoe pointing out a defect in the sole. He removed it gave her a temporary replacement and proceeded to repair it Too late he was asked the cost of his services and told her it was 600,000 dong (30$ US). While this was occurring another man had accosted Bella's shoe with a toothbrush which we was scrubbing away the dirt-He too wanted payment for his services and asked for 5$ Finally a third merchant accosted me to purchase cigarette lighters - for a good price 20$ He persisted despite my refusals but eventually was talked down to 5$. As for  Michele and Bella we risked a second Gulf of Tonkin incident by paying them 6$ and 1.50.
